Merton Hanks is a former American football player who played in the National Football League (NFL) as a safety. He was born on March 12, 1968, in Dallas, Texas.
Hanks was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round of the 1991 NFL Draft and played with the team for eight seasons. He was known for his distinctive "chicken dance" celebration after making big plays on the field.
Hanks was selected to four Pro Bowls and was named an All-Pro twice during his career. He was also a key member of the 49ers' defense during their Super Bowl-winning seasons in 1994 and 1995.
After retiring from playing, Hanks has worked in various roles within the NFL, including as a coach and executive. He is currently the Vice President of Football Operations for the NFL.
